Greetings Mid Atlantic Community,

Bulungibwansi means ‘for the well-being of earth’

In pre-colonial Buganda, Bulungibwansi was the name for the beautiful road network that connected all counties. These were constructed by hand, remnants of which can be recognized at some former county headquarters. They have been paved over or fallen into disuse since the introduction of motorized transportation. The tradition remains but has been modified to encompass community challenges through initiatives that engage communities to protect, conserve and preserve the world around them. 

In the past, Oluwalo was the tax levied by the Buganda government throughout the kingdom. It was abolished in the mid 1960s as a tax but still remains as a  means to support administrative, business operations and services throughout Buganda in cash or kind. The diaspora community has made donations over the years that include an ambulance,  a Mobile Clinic, and most recently raised over $15,000 for computers for county distribution. In addition, the North America community including Canada have supported an annual Medical Mission to provide two-week health clinics in different rural communities in Buganda. 

It's important that we participate in these initiatives and projects to continue the Bulungi bwansi tradition. Since many of us cannot travel to Uganda every year, our Mid-Atlantic community  will support the cause through fundraising.
